Internet connectivity issue for some users

September 29, 2006

Some people may not be able to get through to BillMonk.com right now. The problem is upstream of our service provider. They report that a major bundle of Internet fibers connecting Los Angeles and Washington state was accidentally cut at around 10am. While normally the Internet architecture can work around downed links, a cut of this magnitude means that some people’s routes will just not work until a fix is in place. This problem is affecting many Internet companies; an army of engineers is working on it. We’ll keep you posted.

[Update 12:48pm] The issue appears to be resolved. Whew!

Moving our servers this weekend

June 7, 2006

Our little BillMonk is all grown up and *sniff* moving out of the house! That's right, the time has come to move our servers to a co-location facility. Once this is done, you'll see faster page load times and improved service reliability.

The service will be down for a few hours as we whisk our servers to their secret remote bunker. This outage is planned for Saturday June 10th, from 8:30am until noon (Pacific time). Check this blog for updates!

Update @2pm

The installation went smoothly, our servers are now securely lodged in what I'd say is the computer-equivalent of a penthouse suite.

Early morning hiccup

February 4, 2006

We had a power outage in the early morning and our batteries didn’t last, which led to us being down. Some of you might have noticed the outage but we are back up now. All your data is intact, and all systems are go.

We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. To make sure this doesn’t happen again, we are investing in a more robust power backup solution.

[Update 2/7] Everything is much better now. We shuffled the distribution of power around and got another backup power supply. See Chuck getting the battery in our fancy company car.

Load Balancer

January 22, 2006

We installed a load balancer late last night/early this morning. This will make it really easy for us to scale. Granted, we’ve not had any problems with scale so far (even with significant load yesterday, our CPUs stayed nice and cool at 99% idle) but we want to grow and grow. There were a few hiccups (a few blank pages served, and the wrong ssl cert) in the midst of the installation, for which we do apologize. Things appear to be peachy now - but of course please let us know if you ever have any problems.
